Moon Phase and Solunar Tables: What Holds Up

Solunar theory promises major and minor feeding periods every day. Here is where it came from, the part of it that survives scrutiny, and the moon effect that is real and easy to use.

Short answer

The moon has two genuinely useful effects: it drives tides, which are the strongest timing signal in saltwater, and it provides night-time light, so bright moonlit nights feed better than dark ones for night-active species. The "major and minor periods" of classic solunar theory are a much weaker signal, and where they appear to work they are usually tracking tide or twilight, which are easier to read directly.

Solunar tables are printed in almanacs, built into most fishing apps, and taken as gospel by a lot of anglers. They are also about a century old and were never derived from feeding data. It is worth separating the parts that have a mechanism from the parts that do not, because two of the three are genuinely useful.

Where solunar theory came from

John Alden Knight published the solunar theory in 1926. The core claim: fish and game feed on a daily schedule set by the moon's position, with two major periods when the moon is directly overhead or directly underfoot, each lasting a couple of hours, and two shorter minor periods at moonrise and moonset.

Knight arrived at it by collecting angler reports and looking for a pattern, then attributing the pattern to lunar position. He originally listed 33 factors and reduced them to three: sun, moon and tide. The name is a contraction of solar and lunar.

That is the whole provenance. It was a pattern-matching exercise on self-reported catches, not a controlled study, and self-reported catch data has an obvious problem: people fish when it is convenient and pleasant, so the reports cluster around mornings, evenings, weekends and good weather regardless of what the moon is doing.

The confound nobody separates

Here is the structural problem with validating solunar tables, and it is the reason the debate never resolves.

The moon's transit and the tide are locked together. The lunar day is 24 hours 50 minutes, and a semidiurnal tidal cycle runs on the same clock. So a "major period" at lunar transit lands close to a predictable tidal state.

Meanwhile the minor periods, moonrise and moonset, fall near sunrise and sunset for a good part of every lunar month. Around a new moon, moonrise is close to sunrise. Around a full moon, moonrise is close to sunset.

So on any day when a solunar table looks impressive, the honest question is whether the fish were responding to lunar position, or to the tide, or to twilight. Tide and twilight both have clear mechanisms and are trivially easy to look up. Lunar position does not have a mechanism that anyone has demonstrated on feeding behaviour.

What is actually real

Three moon-related effects survive.

Tide. Overwhelming, and not controversial. The moon is the dominant driver of tidal range, and moving water is when inshore saltwater species feed. Spring tides at new and full moon produce the largest range and strongest flow; neap tides at the quarters produce the weakest. If you fish salt, this is the moon effect that matters and you should read it off a tide chart rather than a solunar table.

Night-time light. A full moon high in the sky puts a usable amount of light on the water. For nocturnal and twilight-feeding species that restores enough visibility to hunt, so bright nights genuinely feed better than dark ones. This effect is strongest for catfish, tench, and the low-light specialists like walleye and snook, and it has a straightforward mechanism: it is the same visibility argument that makes dawn and dusk productive.

There is a corollary anglers report often enough to take seriously. A run of bright moonlit nights can leave predators well fed by morning, which makes the following dawn slower. Dark new-moon nights push more feeding into daylight.

Spawning timing. A number of species time spawning to lunar cycles, particularly in the tropics and among reef fish, and grunion famously spawn on specific spring tides. During those windows behaviour changes a lot, but this is a seasonal effect on specific species, not a daily scheduling rule.

What we do with it

BiteCast computes solunar major and minor periods and shows them, because anglers expect to see them and because they are a reasonable proxy for tidal state. What it deliberately does not do is let them move the score.

The hourly shape of the forecast comes from things with a demonstrable mechanism: the species' own daily activity rhythm, sun elevation and twilight, water temperature, wind, pressure and, in salt water, tide. Moon illumination does feed in, in the specific place where it has a mechanism, which is night-time light for night-active species.

That is a deliberate line. A model that weights solunar periods heavily will look confident and produce a number that mostly tracks the tide anyway, with extra noise on top.

Using the moon without a solunar table

  • Saltwater: work from the tide, not the moon. Around new and full moon expect bigger ranges and faster flow, which usually means better fishing on the moving stages and a shorter productive window.
  • Freshwater, night fishing: the nights either side of a full moon are worth choosing on purpose if you are after catfish, tench or bream.
  • Freshwater, day fishing: the darker half of the month can give a marginally better morning bite, because less feeding happened overnight.
  • Do not skip a good weather window for a moon phase. Pressure trend, wind and water temperature move fishing far more than lunar position does.

Common questions

Do solunar tables really work?

They perform about as well as reading the tide and the twilight times directly, which is what they largely encode. The major and minor periods often coincide with a tidal stage or with dawn and dusk, so a table can look accurate without lunar position doing any of the work. Where a solunar period disagrees with tide and light, there is little reason to trust it.

What is the best moon phase for fishing?

For saltwater, the days around new and full moon, because spring tides move the most water. For night fishing in freshwater, the nights near a full moon, because moonlight lets night-feeding species hunt. For daytime freshwater fishing, moon phase is a minor factor next to weather and water temperature.

Is fishing better on a full moon or a new moon?

It depends on when you are fishing. Full moon favours night sessions and can make the following morning slower. New moon gives darker nights, which suits daytime fishing and tends to concentrate feeding into the dawn and dusk windows. Both produce strong spring tides in saltwater.
