Fish the windward shore, the bank the wind is blowing into. Surface drift pushes plankton and fry against it, and predators follow. A light to moderate wind of roughly 8 to 25 km/h (5 to 15 mph) is close to ideal: it breaks up the surface, cuts light penetration and mixes oxygen. "When the wind is from the west, the fish bite best. When the wind is from the east, the fish bite least." It scans nicely and it has kept its grip for about four centuries. It is also close to useless outside the specific part of England where it was coined.
Why the rhyme mostly fails
In prevailing westerly Britain, a westerly is the ordinary settled airflow and an easterly is the unusual one that arrives with a continental high, cold dry air and hard light in spring. So in that one place, at that one latitude, with that one climate, the rhyme encodes something real: westerly means normal, easterly means a change and often a cold one.
Move it anywhere else and it collapses. On the US Gulf coast an easterly is a warm onshore breeze. In much of Australia a westerly can be the hot dry one. The rhyme is a local weather observation wearing the costume of a universal law.
What survives translation is the general principle underneath it: wind direction matters because of the air mass it brings, so ask what the wind is carrying rather than which compass point it came from. What wind actually does, in order of importance
It moves the food. This is the big one. Surface drift is roughly 2 to 3 per cent of wind speed, so a 20 km/h wind pushes the top layer of water at something like half a km/h. That drift carries plankton, which carries fry, which brings predators. After a few hours of steady wind the windward bank has measurably more life against it than the sheltered one.
It kills the light. A broken surface scatters incoming light instead of transmitting it cleanly. That shifts the visibility balance towards the predator in the same way twilight does, which is why a chop often produces something like an extended dawn window. On a flat calm bright day in clear water, fish can see your line and go deep or under cover.
It mixes oxygen. Surface agitation increases gas exchange. In warm shallow water in midsummer this matters, because that is exactly when dissolved oxygen is lowest and a fish is most likely to be sitting somewhere uncomfortable.
It stirs the margins. On a shallow shore, wave action lifts sediment and dislodges invertebrates. A coloured band of water along the windward bank is a feeding lane, not a problem.

A few refinements:
- Look for points and corners on the windward side, where the drift concentrates rather than merely arriving.
- Wind against current in a river or estuary stands the water up and creates seams. Those seams hold fish.
- If the wind has only just got up, give it time. The effect builds over hours, not minutes.

How much wind is too much
There is a workable range, and both ends of it are real.

The top of that table is a genuine limit rather than a preference. Above roughly force 6 you stop fishing effectively before the fish stop feeding, and on open water or a small boat, wind is the condition most likely to hurt you.
Wind and temperature on the same day
One case worth separating out. A warm wind blowing onto a shallow bank in spring will push a layer of sun-warmed surface water against that bank, and can lift the temperature there by a degree or two above the rest of the lake. Early in the season, when fish are looking for every degree, that windward corner can be the only productive water on the whole venue.
The reverse is true in a heatwave. A cool wind onto a shallow bank is a relief valve, and fish will use it.

Is it better to fish with the wind or against it?
Cast into the wind, at the bank the wind is hitting. Standing with the wind at your back is easier to cast but puts you on the wrong side of the lake. If the wind is too strong to cast into, find a windward point where the angle lets you cast across it rather than dead into it.
