Short answer

Common carp feed hardest in water around 75°F (24°C) and stay active from about 64 to 86°F. They feed hardest in low light, around dawn and dusk, with a lull in the middle of a bright day. Start with a hair-rigged boilie, sweetcorn (hair-rigged kernels), paste bait (dough ball).

The common carp is one of the biggest and hardest-fighting fish in fresh water, found in lakes, rivers and ponds across the United States and Europe. It is a cautious bottom feeder, and in Europe it is the most targeted freshwater fish of all.

Common carp water temperature

Common carp feed best at 75°F (24°C), active from about 64 to 86°F (18 to 30°C). That band comes from the same species model BiteCast scores with, and it is why the Fish Score for common carp rises and falls with the water rather than the air.

As water warms in spring, carp move into warm shallows to feed and spawn, often with loud splashing in the weeds.

For a side-by-side view of every species, see the full water temperature table or the guide to reading water temperature.

When common carp bite

Carp feed hardest at dawn and dusk and after dark in summer. Warm, settled weather is best; a sudden drop in temperature can shut them down for a day or two.

Where to find common carp

Lakes, ponds and slow rivers; roots along soft bottoms in warm water.

Shallow, warm bays, weed beds, lily pads, overhanging trees and the margins of lakes and slow rivers. Clouds of mud, bubbles and tailing fish give away feeding carp.

What common carp eat

In the wild common carp eat aquatic insect larvae, bloodworms, freshwater snails, small crustaceans, zooplankton, aquatic plant matter. Matching the size and color of that forage is the single most reliable way to pick a bait.

About the common carp

A heavy-bodied freshwater cyprinid with a deep olive-bronze body, two pairs of barbels on the upper lip, and large scales, though scaleless mirror and leather varieties also exist.

Native to Eurasia, it has been widely introduced worldwide and favours slow or still warm waters such as lakes, ponds, canals, and lowland rivers with soft, muddy bottoms.

It is an omnivorous bottom-feeder that roots through silt and vegetation, often clouding the water and uprooting plants while sifting food.

Carp commonly reach 4 to 14 kg and fight strongly on rod and line, with the rod-caught world record exceeding 50 kg.
